Chetumal means "Red Castle" and the name originates from when the area was inhabited by the Maya. In 1528, the first Spanish expedition arrived in Chetumal Bay and built their first mission. The town is notable for having more than 100 registered churches. In addition to that, the city is home to a great number of houses of worship and a large number of spires. It is also home to the oldest clock in Mexico, also known as the “Temple of the Clock,” built in 1546, but it was disassembled in 1931. In the city center, you will find the City Museum, which contains the original skeleton of a whale that was washed up on the beach in the 1960s. Other historical places include the Cathedral of Chetumal, the San Juan de Dios Chapel, the Manzanares Fountain, the “House of Dances,” where the Museum of the City of Chetumal is located, and the “La Sirena.” This municipality, which is located on the Caribbean coast of the state of Quintana Roo, is home to the best preserved Maya ruins in the country. The city, which is the largest of the six municipal seats in the state, with a population of over 85,000 inhabitants, has a number of educational institutions, banks, hospitals, restaurants, hotels and places of worship. Despite being one of the oldest cities in Mexico, Chetumal is also one of the most modern, having all the services, goods and services needed to live an urban life, including a hotel and shopping mall.
